Longomilla Vineyard
Atacama, Huasco Valley

An extreme place in the middle of the driest desert of the world. The estate has 9.82 hectares which were planted in 2012; the vineyard is in full production with varieties like Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. 100% of the vines are special clones planted on rootstock suited to the soils in the area. They are nourished by drip-irrigation using water from the River Huasco. The vines are VSP-trained, and the average yields are 5-6 tonnes per hectare.

CLIMATE

CLIMATE
Year-round desert climate with little or no rainfall in winter. The average temperature is 17°C-19°C. There are strong winds that are channelled along the River Huasco. The average minimum temperatures in winter do not drop below 7°C and the maximum temperatures in summer between December and February are 26°C-27°C.

SOILS

SOILS
These are sandy loam and are stony at the surface. Alluvial in origin. 70% sand in the first 70cm of soil. Slightly alkaline and with a calcareous matrix at a depth of 90cm. The profile is very porous because of the stones and sand in the soil. pH 7.5-8.0 and with very little organic matter.

45mm per year. Most rain falls between May and August.

Longomilla is in the Huasco Valley, 675km from Santiago. It is 14km from Vallenar and 32km from the Pacific Ocean, in the River Huasco basin.
